Impacted crop?

Recommended Posts

Hello again fellow omleteers!

I have noticed that one of my girls always looks like she has a very full crop - I'm just a bit worried that it might be impacted - what are the signs please - would I know how to tell? Also, what do you do about it - or do I take her to the vet? She seems perfectly well in herself - just looks , well, - a bit fat!

Thanks everyone!

Check her first thing in the morning, the crop should empty over night.

If not, feel the crop. If it is hard, it is probably impacted. You can either give her olive oil and massage the area a couple of times a day, to try and loosen the mass, or feed her live maggots - they tunnel through the mass and hopefully break it up. :D

If the crop is squishy, it could be sour crop - a yeast infection. Feeding natural bio yoghurt helps stabilise the bacteria.

It is important to keep her hydrated, so make sure she is drinking. Adding some honey to water and syringing it into her beak will help if she isn't drinking.

Good luck.

Edited to add - if you do a search, there is lots of info on here about crop problems. -
