We can't get layers mash anymore, well we can but it means a long journey. So we've a sack of layers pellets. Trouble is rhe Chooks are little wary of them. Do we leave the pellets and hope they get used to them, or do I go travelling for the mash?.

Encorage one to eat it and the others should follow.. Try feeding them from your hand or get them to go to the grub.. Or you could make mash from the pellets by adding water/hot to the pellets.. And slowly add less water..

...or try blitzing some in the food processor......they are the same ingredients as mash after all......and add less blitzed stuff to pellets until they are eating all pellets happily...........of course this is possibly known as pandering, and tough love suggests letting them go hungry til they eat the pellets on their own..........I'm with the latter camp !

 

I do give them pellet porridge though *soak the pellets in water & serve as mush with any additions you see fit; garlic, limestone flour, sultanas, corn, mealworms etc etc*

I added warm water to a batch of pellets that mine weren't keen on for a couple of weeks and then they were fine.

I tried a mash this morning made from some of the Omlet pellets that came with the chickens (and which they aren't that keen on), together with a handful of corn and mealworms and a bit of poultry spice. I just added some warm water and stirred it.

 

They love it. They are spreading it all over the floor of the run and fighting over every mealworm and generally getting terribly excited about it. I guess I'll have to make them mash from now on *sigh*

Mine are very happy to accept pellet porridge as a treat....little do they know They don't always have extras added, in the winter I make it up with warm water & more goodies than in the summer as they find more of their own in the warmer months They still have pellets in their grubs all the time as well.
