Winter Home

Recommended Posts

Basically me and my family have been discussing maybe getting a two-storey hutch for my two bunnies to use during winter and I was wondering if anyone does anything similar? The idea is to put the bunnies in the two-storey hutch during the day and the closed eglu in the shed at night.

The reason being that in order to keep the rain out I cover the eglu run with polythene but then it acts as a wind tunnel despite it being located in the best sheltered place available. Plus due to the nature of our garden the eglu is on concrete which gets cold and wet despite the run cover.

My main concerns are that the hutch won't allow them to get enough exercise. I do have a seperate run I could use but this depends on the weather. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated...

Hi

I don't know if you have the space but there are double decker hutches available which come with runs built in. There are also excellent bad weather covers to be had out there. We no longer use our double hutch for the rabbits because we have the eglu and its run but had a really good cover made for the wooden hutch. We now keep all of the hay in it - a rather expensive storage facility I must say!

One of my pairs is in a two storey hutch. It is 6 foot long so pretty big. I have a Scratch and Newton (!?) cover supplemenyed by the good old Ikea shower curtain, wighted with bricks when it is windy. The upstairs floor is wood covered with plenty of hay, downstairs is concrete with two big dig boxes and carpet off-cuts. Lego is about 9 so it must be Ok for them!

Well thought I better update on how the new hutch is going...and its going good so far. The bunnies seem much happier in it, they always just huddled together in the eglu run, whereas now they seem much warmer and happier. They race around quite happily between the 2 floors. I'm still going to keep my eglu though as it will be nice to put them in it when I put them on the grass during the days in summer (they can't permenantly go on the grass as one of my bunnies has a sensitive tummy). The only thing I have to keep a close eye on is damp/mould but other then that I'm quite pleased :)

Thanks for the update and really pleased that your buns have settled into their new winter home. They love racing up the slope to the first floor don't they! Frank used to race up and down too, although when we first got him home and put him in the bottom part, he didn't realise for ages that there was another floor - he was like a child when he eventually discovered it.
