maryeadrian
Mine are spoiled, too. Spinach, dandilion greens, pumpkin, warm oatmeal on cold days mixed with a variety of grains, yougurt, meal worms, various squash, corn on the cob (on a string swinging from a branch so it moves when they eat it. Very fun fo watch! ) and on occassion pomagranate seeds. I want to try the grapes, soon. They seem to be a hit with everyone.
amc
A whole cabbage - makes for extra yellow egg yolks and also keeps them amused for hours. It is amazing to see just how they can demolish a whole cabbage. Nothing beats it
Jools
Whilst I would agree that too many 'treats' would be bad, I think that greens (and the vitamins in them) e.g. cabbage leaves, chickweed, dandelions, brussels tops, beetroot leaves, etc. are supposed to be good for them and help make their egg yolks lovely and yellow.. Technically they get all the nutrition they need in the right proportions in good quality layers pellets. Mine have access to the ultimate green all year round so they turn their beaks up at any other offerings. However, I'd be killed in the stampede for a stale bread crust!! You're right about greens influencing the yolk colour, which is why commercial feed for intensively kept poultry often has ingredients to enhance it. ChrisEllis
mine love grapes!! they have most of my kitchen s"Ooops, word censored!"s but potato peelings i believe you have to cook, mine are a bit funny with carrots and raspberries and bannans they do not touch! lol! mine go mental for banana - although, it is funny watching their personalitys come out - you could have a whole banana cut into over 50 chunks, one of my smooth feathered plishes will pick it up , and my frizzle poland will want THAT EXACT BIT - and chase him around the whole pen until hes got it, and then the other one goes bak for some - and the same happens!!! so hilarious
batcatz
oops, mine are spoiled too. They usually get a few mealworms when I put them in the run or a handful of corn everyday, but they had scrambled egg (their eggs) today. Two days ago they had porridge oats cooked in water, mixed with a couple of spoons of left over sweetcorn and peas, cooked brocolli and cauliflower stems and leaves mixed in and a couple of aspargus ends and a some garlic bread croutons with chopped cabbage on top. I put it in two small icecream tubs. It kept their tummys warm and lasted a couple of days. This was a special treat due to the cold snow and frost day. Sometimes I do similar with their pellets instead of porridge oats if they have stopped laying eggs to make sure they are eating them. Plus a cabbage hung up in the run as it gives them exercise and greens. Some things they shouldn't eat are tomato plant leaves, rhubarb and leaves, uncooked potato peelings.
