Ain't Nobody Here
I bought a few nice big plant pots recently and am wondering if I'll need to protect them from frost. They are sitting on those little feet - is that enough or should I put something round them too? Also, while I've got you here , I have lots of bulbs (various types) in plastic pots & planters. Should I just leave them where they are or should they be put in a sheltered spot or even in the garage? I'm not even sure if I should cut all the foliage down . Thank you, oh wise ones . Jools
It depends ..... as always! The larger the pot, the less likely the contents are to freeze, but if the plants are precious then it's not a bad idea to wrap something around them to insulate them. I've heard of bubblewrap or staw and sacking being used. It also depends on the plant itself as some are hardier than others. Sheltered from the wind is a good idea, but east facing is not ideal because if there's an overnight frost followed by morning sunshine, the leaves thaw too quickly and die. And of course, whereabouts you are in the country will have a bearing on it too. Ah Edinburgh! A tad chilly at times then. As for the bulbs, if they're spring flowering then just keep them somewhere sheltered, but summer flowering bulbs may prefer the garage, or even a cold frame, for a little added frost protection. I tend not to remove foliage until it's died right back, then I just tidy them up a little. HTH
