Just wanted to share with you, in case you don't know, chickens eat their egg shells!

 

My mum used to keep chickens when we were children and she told me. So I gave them their shells (all crunched up and mixed with some sweetcorn) and they did indeed eat them. Not as greedily as they ate the corn but eat them they did, eventually.

you should put the shells in the oven first (just when cooking other stuff) and makes it better

As I discovered on Monday - I managed to drop an egg in their outside run. OMG - they pounched on it like hens on sweetcorn.

 

I went back later to see them and intended to pick up the shell - gone.

 

Interestingly they have been eating their oyster grit after not bothering before. But I reckon it's because their snail and other crunchie supply has vanished as we move into winter.

Best to bake them in the bottom of the oven and grind them up very finely, so that they don't associate them with their own eggs and start eating them.

 

Useful way of recycling calcium.
