Eating Egg Shells

Recommended Posts

Just wanted to share with you, in case you don't know, chickens eat their egg shells!

My mum used to keep chickens when we were children and she told me. So I gave them their shells (all crunched up and mixed with some sweetcorn) and they did indeed eat them. Not as greedily as they ate the corn but eat them they did, eventually.

As I discovered on Monday - I managed to drop an egg in their outside run. OMG - they pounched on it like hens on sweetcorn.

I went back later to see them and intended to pick up the shell - gone.

Interestingly they have been eating their oyster grit after not bothering before. But I reckon it's because their snail and other crunchie supply has vanished as we move into winter. :vom:
