speckled egg?

Recommended Posts

Hi, just a quick question from a newbie please.

My girls have started laying

My copper black started yesterday, and layed a lovely dark brown egg. Today the egg is a lighter brown with dark brown speckles (beautiful even if i do say so myself :D )

Is that usual? Unusual?

Thank you

Bev

p.s. i know it was her as she was in and out of the cube and i checked each time i saw her re-emerge

Yes - all normal.

Lovely dark brown layers produce eggs which can be speckled.....beautiful aren't they?

The dark brown egg colour will slowly get lighter as the laying season goes on. The colour comes from the birds body and they start to lose colour from their wattles and legs, more obvious in a Barnvelder which has yellow legs, the leg colour slowly fades to cream. Copper Blacks have silver/grey legs. But nevertheless their lovely brown egg colour will slowly fade, only to be restored after the moult. Course it doesn't fade after the first egg  A new layer will be just getting egg production into her stride and you may get a few oddments before it settles down to a regular egg you can instantly recognise.
