Duck Introductions

Recommended Posts

I get very odd results every time I use Search :lol:

Introductions are best handled the same way as for hens - gradually and with a fence between them for a few days if you can.

I did introduce our 6 full-size ducklings to our 3 ducks without keeping them separate but there was a spare duck house and an extra feed station.

I didn't see this thread before we got two new ducks (miniature Silver Appleyards) on Saturday and introduced them to George and Mildred, our existing miniature Silver Appleyard drake and duck.

George and Mildred were playing in the garden when we put the two new ones in Duck World, and the four of them didn't meet until George and Mildred went back to Duck World at bedtime. There was a little bit of noise followed by a bit of "argy-bargy" where the old ducks and new ducks went chest to chest and tried to pull out feathers and made a little bit of noise. It was all a bit pathetic really, and not half as vicious as what happens when new chickens clash. (and George very quickly gave up the argy-bargy being more interested in the fact that there was corn for tea  .) Anyway, it all calmed down after a while and everyone is adjusting to the new arrangement.

So I'd say that there is a bit of a problem but it's not as bad as introducing chickens.

Hi Richard - long time no see :D

I'm glad the introductions went well in the end :D

Hi Lesley. :D You might not have seen me but I've been there ... ... ... not, I hasten to add, in a spooky or creepy way :D I mean that I look at the forum most days, but just haven't contributed anything for a while.
