bluekarin
What on earth did people use before kitchen gadgets became widely available? I was thinking this last week whilst grating bread for bread crumbs as my grinder completely broke I can tell you that grating bread on a cheese grater isn't the most fun I've ever had in the kitchen. Luckily I didn't buy the grinder/blender combo I saw in Robert Dyas as its even cheaper in Comet. edit for typo. It would be even harder to grate something on a garter
Olly
at the garter! I think it was just darn hard work. If you've ever tried whisking egg-whites or something similar without an electric beater ... I'm just too feeble to manage it these days, it's really hard! Not to mention the fact that all the washing was done by hand, that was a day's labour in itself. It was a major factor in women not working outside the home - keeping the family fed and doing the laundry was pretty much full-time work.
