rough bumpy eggs

Recommended Posts

One of my hens consistently lays eggs with nodule type lumps on them. She has been doing this ever since she started laying.

One of the nodules was so big the other day that it came off whilst I was washing the egg, leaving a little hole in the shell.

The quality of the eggs themselves are fine and they still taste yummy.

Can anyone tell me what is causing this ?

Blodwyn did one like this, but they are now normal again. I do give them oystershell grit, and poultry spice and feed them on crumb porridge with a bit of corn, plus they have both corn and pellets on demand. Mostly they like to FR. I think the lumpy egg came after they started FR, so maybe Blodwyn just went mad on the wild food for a day or two, and has now settled down to a better mixed diet.

Do they FR? If so, maybe keep them in for a bit longer to ensure they eat proper chicken diet before letting them out to FR and browse?

They get oyster shell and grit..and they are fed on organic layers.

They have corn as treats .. as well as grapes and broccoli and apples on the odd occasion.

They also free range at least 2 hours a day [ unfortunately we have loads of foxes ]So I have to be around to keep an eye on them ]

I could understand it if all 3 were laying bumpy eggs.... but its only one of them !

They are seriously well fed, plump and healthy chooks
