Chicken boarders

Hi All,

My two new hens have slightly raised, red scales on their legs. I'm assuming its scaly leg mites but as it doesn't look like any other pics I’ve seen of it. Could someone have a look for me and confirm please.

 

 

 

Just to be on the safe side I’ve sprayed them with Johnson's anti-mite spray and covered the legs in Vaseline. Quick question - how long after spraying the legs should you apply the Vaseline? I did it a couple of minutes later, but should i have left it longer?

You did the treatment correctly but dont worry, its not scaly leg mite

 

Reddening of the scales can be linked to maturity in some breeds (more particularly in cockerels but its also seen in females) and can be common in birds of certain colours, scales can be lifted a little on some birds, they can go a bit thickened and raised when a hen moults too, lots of things are normal

Phew - thanks Redwing, that's put my mind at rest.

 

I do feel a bit guilty about treating them unnecessarily, however Tomasina did exact revenge by pooing down my lovely new skirt so i guess we're even!

I think the moral of this tale is 'Always take time to change into your scruffy clothes before performing the weekly hen health check'.
