After thinking it over I'm now thinking that rather than wreck what's left of our lawn we should place it on one of the large areas of paving and provide bark chips and bedding in the run for the chooks. Is that even a good idea considering that the run is "fox proof" and therefore technically should be staked to the ground?

No such thing as a stupid question on this forum .

 

It can certainly be placed on slabs. If you're worried about something levering the run up and crawling underneath (not sure if a fox could do that but you never know ) you could lay something like sleepers or bricks or bits of slab along the run skirt to weigh it down .

No worries about foxes round our way, our garden is pretty much completely walled in, only cats to worry about and even then our two cats will see off any invaders and chickens can look after themselves usually when it comes to cats. Will probably just lay a few of the breezeblocks we have kicking around the place just to keep the run down for our own peace of mind.

 

Again, thanks, it's good to know we have a choice as I can see a good perfect empty space the Eglu can fit right into that'll be nice and sheltered for the girls underneath a couple of trees.

My lot are on the patio slabs in winter (for lazy me as it's right next to back door and less soggy on the run floor). Then in Spring/Summer they move to the grass. Here they are on the patio. I have stones and pot plants to weigh down the run skirt.

That is absolutely fantastic - I love the idea you have of putting corrugated roofing around to provide a proper wee shelter for the girls. Just sawdust down on the ground I see, easy to muck out! It's good to see what others are doing to provide inspiration. Thanks!!

It's Auboise horse bedding on the ground (another brand is Hemcore). Both hemp based products which soak up poops nicely, but need to keep dry hense the Wickes corrugated sheeting. I change Auboise once a month and it composts nicely.
