Baking eggshells

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone, desperate measures are called for whilst I am waiting for my limestone flour to arrive in the post. How long do I bake egg shells for before giving them to the hens in their food?

Tilly has been laying softies for around 3-4 weeks now despite my efforts to get her to eat more oyster shell . I am having to clean the eglu out every day as she lays them on the bars and they fall down in between. She is not unwell and has been wormed. You would not know that there is anything wrong with her.

When I get home from work I am going to have to bake some of Coffee's egg shells (just made a lovely egg sandwich for lunch ... nothing like the ones you get in the shops, even the free range ones).

How long do I bake the shells for and how much do I give? Also when the limestone flour arrives, how much of that do I give considering I have two hens. Coffee will probably need a boost of calcium soon too as she has laid consistently for the past year too.

Thanks in advance

Sorry to hear your girls are laying softies - its no fun when they are a little off colour is it?! :(

I bake the washed shells for about 5 mins at 200 - usually when Ive finished cooking my evening meal in the oven then crush them and add to the chooks food.

As for the limestone flour I add about 3 heaped tablespoons to a grub full of layers and grit.

Have your tired a liquid calcium supplement? I have had huge success with Davinova C, available from the Domestic Fowl Trust, just a teaspoon of so in the glug and within 2 days the girls are back to normal. :D
