Chickens and puppies

Recommended Posts

Hi, I'm new in here. I've only just got my Eglu cube and no chickens as yet. I wonder if anyone can answer this for me. At about the same time as we get our chickens we will also be collecting two Border Collie puppies (@ 7 wks old). I would like to feed my Border Collies with a raw chicken wing each day and wonder if it is alright to do this whilst having my living chickens in the garden with my pups.

Many thanks for any help.

Looking forward to being part of the group.

Trish

HI

Congratulations on the cube(great product) you wont regret it.

Re the pups, I am guessing you mean smell of chicken meat and then the smell of a live chicken?

I think the pups will worry the chickens but once your dog training starts and you can be 110% sure they wont try to eat your chickens what ever you feed them on. My chickens were curious about my very annoying spaniel who would dearly love to eat them all. He was always allowed to view them through the mesh only, and they have got use to him and do stand up to him, but this took a few months. If he was younger we may have had more success early on but his bad hunting ways were already established(which to be honest we encouraged).

He is 4 years old and after nearly a year we have only just allowed him out with them free in the garden under strict spervision(as he is killer dog..usually rabbits the odd duckling etc). So far so good.My dog eats chicken and turkey meat and as far as I can tell he doesnt seem to relate the two he is more interested as long as its meat. I dont trust him though.

Once your pups start to understand recall etc just introduce them all slowly. Perhaps training classes as you have very intelligent trainable breed. The only other thing but I am sure you realise you shouldnt give dogs poultry bones as they splinter easily, so I assume its just the meat only off the wing.

Good luck indie :) ps when are you getting the chickens then :?:

Our dogs eat raw chicken wings, bones as well (and necks and backs) but apart from that I agree with Indie - good training and take it slowly.

Ours don't seem to equate the live hens with their dinner and are more curious than anything else when they are near the hens.

There is a thread somewhere in this section on BARF - if you want to read that as well, I'll have a look for it?
