Alis girls
My girls went FR in the rain - looked very scrawny but enjoyed themselves. will it do them any harm? they also had visitors who wanted to see them and I went to pick one up and she ran away. I have a lot of friends who wish to see them.
Olly
The books will tell you that hens don't like the rain, but mine often seem to enjoy being out in it. As long as there is shelter available if they choose to use it, a bit of rain won't hurt. However free ranging in wet weather will destroy your garden faster than you can blink - personallly I don't let mine out if it's raining more than a short shower. dannablue
My girls dont mind light rain but heavy rain or hail as we had the other day they hate and dash inside under cover. I have part of their run covered so that they can shelter. I do have one girl, Sybil, who will wander about in her run in the rain and doesnt seem to mind, the others have their limits. She is a light sussex and I must admit the rain showers do help keep her lovely and clean and she is whiter than white after her shower! Alis girls
I have to say I take on board about the garden - but the girls have done a brillaint job getting rid of dead pampas grass bits onto lawn for me to dispose of. The downside is the muddy feet (theirs not mine) - Bathsheba rushed over to see me today and she had 2 black feet. "what have youbeen doing?" I asked her - she had the grace to look at her feet then scuttled off to find her sisters. She reminded me of a naughty child OH said "OMG I'm not picking her up" I think they need wellies and macs. ladyjulian
Mine love the rain - I think because there are more worms wriggling about when it rains... I went out to them yesterday when it was heaving down to put the rest of the cover down (I have a clear plastic sheet over the top of the run, but in warm weather I've only had it half over the run, I don't want to cook them!) and although they had half the run covered AND the shelter under the hen house, no, they weren't sheltering, they were jostling for space in the uncovered part so they could enjoy the rain. They didn't like this morning's short hail shower though! They all went scuttling into the run - it's nice to know they will take shelter when they want to.
