Nicho
Hello, We have 3 chicks and all have just started to lay. Balti always lays a good size egg but the other two are only laying very very small eggs, although they are starting to get more regular. Is this normal? and if so will they eventually start laying normal size eggs. Also Penelope has taken to laying outside of the nest box. We have found 2 eggs in the past 2 days in the eglu run. What can I do to get her to lay in the nest? She is taking time on the nest but then seems to go outside to actually lay. I am very new to chickens so if this is all obvious I do apologise. Thank you for your time and any comments would be most helpful. Thanks Nicho
Egluntyne
Sometimes, when they are new to laying, they are 'caught short' as they are unfamiliar with the sensations, and lay in the run. If there is a bit of a queue for the nest box, this could also cause her to lay in the run. It generally sorts itself out.
Ain't Nobody Here
All my girls' first eggs were laid al fresco too . They soon got the hang of it. The eggs should increase in size fairly quickly so don't worry! How long have they been laying?
Nicho
They've been laying for almost a week now. I was a bit worried as they have been doing a lot of free ranging lately and I don't know if they've been laying aropund the garden. Do you think this is likely? I have tried to look but haven't found any rogue eggs yet.
Egluntyne
It is possible. Have a look under shrubs and in old planters.
