Blocked Vent? # Sad update

Recommended Posts

Hello

Gladys seems to be struggling with a blockage in her vent. She hasn't laid an egg for a very long time but has seemed very happy and normal, eating fine etc. She had a lot of poo stuck around her vent last week so I gave her a bath and cleaned it all up but now she is seeming pretty lethargic, sitting down most of the time, poo caked on again and obviously trying to pass something. Her vent is pulsing as if she is trying to push something out but she just seems to be stuck.

Having had no problems in the 2 years since we first got hens I am a bit stuck. Any advice greatfully received

Thanks

Oggy

Hello again.

Update is that Gladys seems to be "waddling" like a duck and carrying her rear end quite low, although she is not moving a huge amount. She still has a strong appetite and drinking water ok.

Have separated her from Maude as she had been pecked yesterday and lost a few feathers. Should I continue with the worming for a couple more days and see if there is an improvement??

Thanks to those who passed on their advice. Gladys was a lot worse last night and this morning wouldn't eat anything and had to be forced to drink some water.

We went to the vets (who know what they're doing with poultry) and unfortunately it was none of our suspicions and she actually has a large tumour. Her quality of life had gone down rapidly in the last week and it is months since she last laid so we took the horrible but inevitable decision for her to be PTS. Not a nice decision but I am happy that this was better than letting her suffer and becoming more dehydrated

RIP Gladys x
