Hysterical chicken!!! Help please?

Recommended Posts

Hi, I'm new to this site so hoping I've posted in the right place, in the right way, etc.

We have 2 beautiful silkies who we bought at auction about 6 weeks ago, Lady marmalade and The Baroness.

TB lays an egg every 26 hours without fail for 4 days then has a day off but LM has never laid one. we don't really mind her not laying but whenever TB has laid, LM gets hysterical. She starts shreaking and doesnt stop until we go and speak to her and even then she takes a bit of calming down. They have a large coop with inside perching/nesting area and a big run and sometimes LM isnt even in near the nesting box when an egg is laid. TB never makes a sound louder than a little chuckle.

Does anyone know why LM does this? Is she confused by the egg? Is she jealous? Is she happy?

I'm a veterinary nurse but even the assistance of 8 vets isn't any help. Best advice so far is to get another 3rd silkie to maybe keep LM company whilst TB is laying?

Very confused, any help greatly appreciated.

one of mine yells when she is laying, another one yells when the others are yelling - I think its what they do - they are very deep and meaningful creatures (completely bonkers :lol: ) so it could just be their way.

oh, welcome to the forum by the way (sorry  that was very rude of me) :D:D lovely to see you.

this will probably get shifted to "chickens" but dont worry, a lovely Mod will do it for you :D

Hi lady marmalade

welcome to the forum i am a newbie to :P

I have had a similar reaction with one of my girls, Steve (yes thats her name  ) makes a very loud shrieking noise occasionally. I have been wondering what is going on there myself, I personally think all they want is a bit of love and attention while the other girls are inside laying.

I spent about an hour and a half inside their run chatting to young Steve as Heratio, Jillian and Kate were inside.

I have not had a similar squawking noise recently so i presume our little time together has done the trick.

If that fails then maybe it is because she is jealous, i here chickens can show a range of emotions and feelings ranging further than sheer cuteness and wonderful stupidity.

One final note, have you tried placing Lady Marmalade in with the Baroness whilst she is laying.

Hope your girl gets better :)

I think that this has been resolved.

But i had a similar problem. before edward started laying, she used to cry out when jon, her identical sister, was in the nesting box, and sit with her when she was laying untill she finished, edward was silent, but jon screamed out. Then Jon started laying and they still lay next to each other, its amazing. They do everything together.

By the way, lovely names! My silkies are called Peggy and Pat(ty) :P

If you bought them at an auction, they might not be the age, and LM might not even be the sex that you have been led to believe.

Can you upload some pics for us to have a butchers at? :D

I could but I'm sure they are hens. Not sure of the age but I don't really mind that.

Thanks for your help everyone. :D
