whyde
Sadly one of my chickens died two days after I set another onto 12 hatching eggs. Nature is a wonderful thing and I am now looking forward to what it may give me over the next couple of weeks! - I candled the eggs at day 6 (should have waited until day 10 but you know what us chicken keepers are like!!!!!!!!!!!) Of the 12 we started with, one was broken in the nest so I have taken that away. Candling revealed another was cracked - so I removed it (I read an internet post about using sticking plaster and managing to hatch a cracked egg, but this is my first time and I really can't go to those extremes!) So now I am waiting for Friday 21st May (day 10 - which is the day I had originally intended to (and been told to) candle the eggs! Part of me just thinks let nature take it's course, but it is not often that you have the chance to see it happening right before your eyes! It's like being 5 years old in infant school when they bring in the eggs and the incubator..................... except I can't do a 'chick didn't make it so let's pop in another one' if any of the chicks hop off to chicken heaven! Fingers crossed - will keep you posted! Wendy Guardian of; Penny 4 years and hopefully a good first time mum (left it quite late - just like me!) Fern RIP don't know what took her but she was a pretty chicken and a good layer Mabel a hybrid about 10 months and laying big tasty eggs Has no voice!!!!!! Felicity - some kind of bantam cross - very grey feathering and tiny little eggs - bless her! Chook n Boo Mum
Oooo Wendy, Patience is a virtue...but not one of mine either I have resisted the temptation to candle however, partially due to the inccy eggs being Marans so difficult to see through anyway, and my 2 Pekins being like wound up springs who would get very distressed if I tried to candle their eggs I'm waiting for next Wednesday for Blossom's to hatch and 7th June for the Inccy Marans and Holly's eggs to hatch Sha x
