Cool Chicks

Recommended Posts

Does anybody know how hens keep cool in hot weather? Matilda is strutting about with her wings out and her beak open, otherwise she's fine. I suppose this is her way of cooling down 8) On a separate topic, my two new girls are settling in well although Henrietta and Matilda are desperate to get into the separate run and have a go at them. As they are unable to get them, they have turned their anger on the cat. He is currently sitting under a hedge keeping well out of the way!

5 of mine went up to their necks in a trug of water yesterday to cool them down - they spent ages preening themselves afterwards and stopped panting. Make sure they have plenty of shade - if you have a covered run to stop the rain make sure it is not like a greenhouse in this weather - I have left shades in place, but removed waterproof layer on my runs.

Thanks for your replies. The shades are in place and there are lots of shrubs and shady areas in the garden for them, but they seem to like strutting around the middle of the lawn! Daft or what?

Then a quick water bath looks like a good option - my black orp was doing the same - all that fluff and black absorbing the heat and she still wondered around the garden whilst the others sat dust bathing in the shade!
