Frost damaged asparagus

Recommended Posts

Hi, we planted 2yr old asparagus crowns last year. We had planned on not cutting the spears this year as advised in all my gardening books. But the fronds have been frost damaged, Is it better to leave them or cut down the damaged fronds?

If anyone knows the answer I would much appreciate your advise.

Cheers.

I would say that provided they are growing, leave them alone, they will still build up the strength of the plant for next year.

Look out for asparagus beetle too. they are black and red and about 1/2cm long and the eggs look like tiny black spikes on the spears. I usually find a squishing spree at about this time keeps them in order each year. they are always worse in warm dry conditions though.
