chickenopolis
My girls have just demolished an unguarded young lupin plant. The flower and seeds are in tact, but all the leaves have been munched. Are they poisonous? Am v worried - if they are, what do I do about it.
hunkydoory
I sincerely hope not my lupins went years ago! But the girls lived to ripe old ages.
hippy chick
I think they are, I have read a post on here some where that lists all the poisonous plants. I hope that they are going to be ok. http://www.poultryhelp.com/toxicplants.html#L
squidsin
My bantams eat my lupins with no ill effects, except to the lupins!
chickenopolis
Went to bed wondering what this morning would hold, if the leaves would have a bad effect on the girls. Scoured the internet last night; yes, lupins contain toxins.....Don't know how I got to sleep. Woke up with the dawn chorus this morning at 4.30 - looked outside, and I saw a sight that made me smile. 2 ginger lovelies rootling around in their run, looking for any stray treats they missed yesterday. Went to let them out this morning at 6.30 - very vocal and looking very sexy in the sunlight - so to answer my own question, yes Lupins may be poisonous, but my girls are well and perky this morning... So if your ladies eat them, don't worry. Hope you all have a good day
lillybettybabs
i'm guess it is a build up of toxin that will hurt them, They should be able to get ride of the toxins of a few leaves, their kindneys and liver will just have to work a little harder. It is a shame they don't have an inbuilt radar to let them know what is bad for them.
