fighting chickens

Recommended Posts

we have just started to reintroduce a chicken after being isolated. we started by showing her on the others on the other side of the fence and they were fighting but with the fence between them they would always back off though.

we started to introduce her in the enclosure and they have been fighting and have evan drawn some blood on her. mum says that we should let them fight and sort them selves out and only stop them if it gets really bad, i dont think that this is a very good idea and it is very distressing to see. please help i don't know what to do and i don't want her to get any more hurt.

How long have they been apart and how long did you let them see each other with the wire between them ? I would think you need to give it at least a week, and then maybe let them free range together for a while and see how it goes. If you don't free range your chooks, maybe you could pick out one or two of the more placid/submissive chooks and put them in with the single one. Leave them together for a week or so ( in sight of the others) , then reintroduce all 3 at the same time. I think one chook in with several others intent on picking on her could lead to disaster if you aren't careful.

I would seperate her again if they have drawn any blood. The others will keep pecking at any wounds and the situation could get much worse. If you can keep her next to the others with a fence in between, I would just leave it like that for a while, at least until any wounds heal.

I always think it is best not to rush any introductions, too stressfull for you and the chickens.

thanks, we'll give it ago. she's been there a few of hours now and they seem to have lost intrest abit, but she keeps picking fights with the others and im confused as to why?? any ideas??

If she's been seperated for a while, then the pecking order will have changed and she now needs to find her place in it again.
