My two chickens are now both laying, bless them. Aphrodite, the Sussex Star, was taking her time coming into lay but three days ago I found an egg in the run.

 

The only problem is that since then I've had two more eggs from Aphrodite, one in the run and one laid under a bush, that I never would have found if I hadn't heard her loud and proud clucking! Hera, who has been laying for a couple of weeks now, has always laid in the nest box. So, should I be getting a rubber egg to put in the nesting box to encourage Aphrodite to lay there or will it all sort itself out? I'm a tad concerned that if I leave a rubber egg in the nesting box it'll not only encourage them to lay in the right place but also send them broody. Am I worrying unnecessarily?

 

I was also able to give four eggs away to my brother yesterday, as we had a few extra, and he was very pleased. It's great to make people so happy with such a small thing.

I just wanted to say that it is such a good feeling isn't it when you give eggs away! I love giving them to my neighbours and did sell some at work for a while.

 

I can't really answer your question I'm afraid. I did find that Vera, who has only started laying this week, wouldn't go in the nesting box if Betty had already laid in there. I had to remove Betty's egg first. Today was the first day I collected 2 eggs from the nesting box. I've only really had a problem when there has been another chook on the nest laying when another wants to go in. I've also had it where they have been free ranging and have been too lazy to go back to the Eglu to lay - I've found one balancing on a brick wall around the patio before now!
