ais_russell
We just bought two silkie bantams on tuesday to replace the 7 chickens we lost to a family of foxes.. They've seemed fine, but as i looked at them today one of them looked a bit strange. She looks like she's breathing out of her mouth instead of breathing through her nose. And she spends most of her time either crouching or sitting [Neither of them have been a great deal active as their settling in but the other is running about more than this one] Mum's given her some water just incase she had something stuck in her throat, but she's still opening and closing her mouth too often, and sometimes she'll stretch her kneck out while doing so. We've also brought her in just incase we need to keep a watch on her. Is there anything wrong with her or is this nothing to worry about? We havent even had her a week, i hope she makes it! If anyone could help it would be greatley appreciated - the vets around here don't do chickens!
Redwing
She could just be stressed or hot - both make chickens pant, crouch and stick their necks out If she is always sleeping, puffed up or not really moving it might be worth getting a vet to look her over
ais_russell
I think your right, she may be hot in this weather, and she may not have completley settled in yet. Just checked in on her now and shes a little crouched, but other than that seems fine hopefully its just the heat, but ill check again in the morning [i live in the middle of nowhere so i hope a vet isnt needed!]
ais_russell
Luckily we found a vet in town who can look at chickens, she thinks its gape worm as there was an infection in her neck, she put her on antibiotics and gave her an injection of something else, and wormers. She's perked up alot and is no longer breathing through her mouth so i think its done the job Thanks for the advice Redwing
