Trusting broody

Recommended Posts

I have spent 3 hours today sat by the eglu run while poppy has wondered about with the 6, 4 day old chicks. Have tried not to pick any of the chicks up, but when my 2 yr old got the meal worm tin out to feed the other girls, poppy heard the shake of the tin and went nutty! :P So i decided to pop my hand in to feed her some meal worms, she broke them up for the chicks and then decided it was far easier to let them climb onto my hand! my hand was covered in little chicks s"Ooops, word censored!"ping over a meal worm. I thought she would be very protective of them and she certainly is when my hubby goes to change the water however she seems to be completely at ease with me around the chicks :) I am really pleased that she trusts me with her fluff balls. Pekins are excellent judges of characters

Although i did notice one of the chicks with a little dirty bum, had a squirty, slightly foamy poo too. Not sure when we can actually worm chicks or if it's just because they have strarted to eat the grass  and it's a bit of a change for thier little tummy?????

Keep an eye on the mucky botty & if necessary be prepared to wipe it clean with a wet flannel or whatever, but don't leave the little one wet, be sure the fluff & feathers are dry so the baby doesn't get a chill.....hopefully it's just the extras like grass & mealworms.........are the babies on medicated crumb....this might help keep anything nasty at bay whilst they are so small.....my 5 week old Marans are just starting to come off the medicated by mixing the medicated with the standard Smallholders chick crumb with a few Growers pellets for good measure to get the used to larger food.........not surprisingly the pellets go first, then the crumbs  ..........with my nearly 7 week old Pekins I did the mixture for about a week, then added less medicated & more pellets for a week or so, then I'll drop the crumb all together.

One of my broodies was very trusting to start with, then she decided (after a week or so of less handling by me due to being away) she has become super-protective & actually ran flapping at me when I tried to pick up a baby........the other one is so laid back she practically horizontal  I can pick up her babies.....if I can catch them  ...........and walk out of the pen, she doesn't bat an eyelid

Good luck with them all,

Thanks xx I will keep an eye on it , they are on normal chick crumbs, i have no idea where i can get the medicated crumbs from. It is a nightmare where we live to get poultry feed and have to drive about half an hour to get some normal feed! I shall google it and find someone who will deliver. I have got some flubenvet but i guess this is way too strong for the little ones.

Am in farnbrough Hampshire , looked everywhere for it today but spoke opted for coxoid instead. Got some from flyte so fancy who said just give them 7 days worth as a preventative. I asked why i couldnt get hold of the medicated crumb and he said that it is more for commercial use hence why we cant get hold of it. Hopefully that will arrive tommorrow :P

I get mine from here http://www.sprcentre.com/product.asp?numPageStartPosition=1&strPageHistory=cat&strKeywords=&strSearchCriteria=&PT_ID=420&P_ID=1366&btnProduct=Click+Here+for+More+Details though being just down the road does help  !!

They do sell smaller bags in the shop for a couple of pounds or so for 2.5kg, though I can't see it obviously on the website.........

If you want me to I can grab some & post it to you unless you are coming towards Petersfield, Midhurst or Haslemere...I could meet you with a bag or two & tie it in with a visit to see my grandsons................
