Can ducks live happily with chickens?

Recommended Posts

Hi Salbo

Ours do, though they don't sleep together. There was a little bit of s"Ooops, word censored!"ping when they were first introduced but nothing "the Equalizer" (pump action water pistol) couldn't control :o

One of our broody hens has just hatched a duck egg and is looking after the duckling - the other chickens would attack it if they weren't kept seperate.

hope this helps

Yes and Yes

Yes they can live together(their needs are similar just sleeping accomodation is different no roosting bars needed for ducks, prefer a flat floor/bedding and they will lay eggs in a mound they will scoop out of the bedding). A shed with a shelf would be ideal ie ducks on the floor and chickens up a bit higher with nest boxes.

I have two young mallard ducklings that I will be releasing and so far they have attacked the young bantams quite a few times. Yes the chickens would kill the ducklings and other ducks do kill other ducklings too etc etc Its all about food and eliminating any other contenders.

Ducks do need some form of water to put their heads in(it doesnt have to be a wacking big pond just a container that will need changing.... ducks are very messy.

But they can live together just plan it a bit and go for a utility breed ie khaki campbells are hardy friendly good beginners bird too

Good luck Donald
