A daft spaniel and chickens - can they share?

Recommended Posts

We currently have our three girls in a cube with the standard run. They are allowed a limited amount of free range time but find that despite having fields and fields to roam near their run, they chose to go the other way and go in to our small garden :( To do this they have to fly over our chest high fence

Given the set out of our house and our time it also means that generally they are out of sight so I know its not ideal but I like them to have some freedom.

Now our very daft spaniel pays absolutely no attention to the girls what so ever, even when they have flapped around he ignores them. He is unbelievably docile and not mad like most spaniels. So my question is can I let them all share a run area? The dog has a huge fenced off run area all to him self when we aren't around. Its secure (over 6 foot high fence/wall) and grassed. I wondered about letting the girls have access to it too from their cube so they have free space all the time and he'll probably offer protection from Mr Fox. My thinking is they are safer with him than alone?

Does anyone one have any wise words? I am as confident as can be that he won't harm them but are there health issues? I particularly wondered about them eating his mess :vom:

Thanks in advance

I have a Manchester Pie House (AKA a Mutt) and she had been a bit of a chicken chaser before we had our girls. I thought that she would never be able to be trusted with our chickens. She is however living in harmony with them. She is really good with them and is never a concern. Poor thing does tend to be a bit hen pecked by them which is funny in the circumstances. If your dog has shown no interest I would give it a go.
