Poorly chook - any help appreciated

Recommended Posts

Ginger is 18 months old and she has always been a good layer until the last few weeks when she has started laying - and eating - lots of softies. Recent 'proper' eggs have been increasingly mishapen with watery whites. We have given her limestone flour and she was wormed not long ago. Today she has been very out of sorts - all hunched up and lethargic. We've bruoght her indoors, cleaned her bottom which was mucky with what looked like dried yolk and blow dried her with the hairdrier. We have now put her in a cat basket on some straw and a snugglesafe. What else can we do for her? Is is a stuck softie or something else? Is she running out of egg laying capacity?

It sounds softie related. If it is a warm day with you (quite hot here) you may want to remove the snuggle safe if it has been heated for her as she may overheat. In the long term you need to try and get some decent shells on her eggs. What did you worm her iwith? Make sure that she is getting a good quality mash or pellets and cut out any corn or treats. You can add something in the way of a calcuim/vitamin D supplement but don't overdo it. You can use limestone flour & cod liver oil or perhaps a liquid supplement like Zolcal D. The most natural thing is baked, crushed egg shell.
