Bertrum
Now clearly I don't think the my hens are eating the woodchip, but... ..they spend most of each day on wood chip in their standard Eglu Classic run. They spend a great deal of time scratching about in there finding all sorts of goodies, but so much so that they hardly seem to eat any pellets. They look completely healthy and the layer lays good shelled eggs, so I'm not concerned about poor nutrition at the moment; and I'd rather they found their own food in the wood chip than them be bored. In fact, I think the way the wood chip is a good bug house is a bonus when using it in the run. I think this maybe just because we are in the height of summer when food of the crawly beast variety is plentiful, and as the temperature cools and the days shorten our hens will be looking for pellets again. Has anyone else found that their hens are finding enough to eat in the run at the moment?
