Flying Ants & WIR's

Recommended Posts

:?: Just a couple of Q's - Is it ok for the chooks to eat flyin ants, as they thought all there dreams had come true last night! They were running & jumping all over the garden catching them, they looked so funny :D just wondered if anyone else has had them flying around - According to GMTV this morning the flying ants are everywhere because of the humid weather.

:?: No 2 Q! - I have been thinking about a WIR - but when i google them they all come with hen coops, which i didn't want as i want to use the eglu classic in it. Does anyone know of anywhere they do them - otherwise will have to be nice to my OH & get him to make me one!

I Thought i would be happy with just the eglu run, but am thinking of the chooks and would like to make them something really roomy with some roosting bars. They only get to free range when i get home from work at 5pm, but they have a routine now so are used to it :D

Wish i had got chooks years ago, they are great to have around, I don't shop for handbags & clothes anymore its just chicken treats/food/more treats/more food/WIR/etc etc Lol!

Thanks

Lynne

I've not seen any flying ants yet!

I know many birds eat flying ants so I would assume they're fine!!

There are many places to just buy a WIR from, some places sell them flat packed, others make tailor made onces...I just converted the old shed! It had been used for storing junk for years so we emptied it, striped out the panels of two sides, leaving two solid and the frame work...and meshed it in!! :D Total cost - £30 wire!!

I haven't got any flying at the moment - I do know that my chooks would have a fantastic time devouring them. I can't imagine they'd be harmful - especially when I think about the other beasties that the chickens catch and eat :vom:

With regards to WIR - try this place for a quote.... http://www.bay-animal-housing.co.uk/

I brought a 21'x12' from chris. It was a great price and great quality. It was easy to assemble too - although if you're close enough, he will also assemble for you.

My chickens were exactly the same about the flying ants a couple of days ago. There was a huge swarm, and I thought the chooks would immediately run for cover. Not a bit of it. They feasted on them for the next two hours.

I think mine thought they had struck gold, i wondered what on earth they were doing charging around and jumping in the air! They certainly had a feast.

We had some flying ants yesterday and the girls happily made short work of them. We had some last year and our late Henrietta was like a chuck possessed in catching them. They can't have done her any harm because she lived for many more happy months following that and she ate loads more than any of the other girls.
