Help please! Dripping vent and no eggs

Recommended Posts

One of my chickens is poorly. She hasn't laid since january and has lost feathers around her vent. I've dusted her with Nettex total mite powder (and my other girl) but she is constantly dripping from her vent. Can anyone explain why this is please?

Where are you - maybe a nearby omleteer knows of a suitable vet.

I don't want to alarm you but if she is egg bound she does need to see a vet ASAP (within 48 hrs).

I had to take Lily to PDSA (as was out of normal hours) - this vet didn't know much/anything(?) about chickens.

However, fortunately the car journey seemed to have displaced not only the soft egg but a proper egg that was stuck behind it !! She perked up immediately.

Good Luck, H

Hi. We're in the Cotswolds and have just come back from the vets. Not good news :( They think she has peritonitis (infection of the repro tract). She's had antibiotics and painkiller and the next 24 hours will be critical. If she hasnt perked up by tomorrow, we will have to think about euthanasia :(

It is lovely that she is well but if it was peritonitis it may well not be the end of it. Sorry, but I don't want it to come as a horrible shock for you. Can you feel fluid in her abdomen? If so this wont just go away. If it is not drained, it continues to fill and they get very tight and uncomfortable. If it is drained, it eventually reforms.

Hiya. Just back from the vets, again. Had another antibiotic jab.

You could well be right, this problem may re-occur but at the moment she is doing brilliantly! we will just take it day by day and keep everything crossed that she's ok.

Thank you all for your kind comments :D
