Chicken baths/worming/general health UPDATED

Recommended Posts

I need to bath Nigella - her bottom and undercarriage are really grubby. I'm planning on filling a trug with warm water and sticking her into that but what sort of detergent should I use, if any? I've got Johnson's baby shampoo or Fairy Liquid. Any advice please? Also, will a good rub dry with a towel do her - I'm hoping so!

Thanks

My Agatha (ex-batt) needed a bath and a bit of a trim 'down below' recently - she's wormed regularly and no nasties found, just seems to get a pooey bottom :?

Anyway, we sprayed her with purple spray to deter any pecking as she had some bald bits and it seemed to work, so might be worth giving that a go?

Hopefully someone else will be able to help with the worming age question.

Thanks folks! Egluntyne ... when would be best to worm them? I've had them 10 weeks and they haven't been wormed yet. They're around 16, 19 and 26 weeks. Maybe if I wait another month til the Pekins are a bit older, then it might be better - although if Nigella gets dirty behind again, then maybe sooner rather than later, just incase?

Thanks

UPDATED

Updating: Bathed her using Baby Shampoo - she loved it. Followed Egluntyne's bathing directions from another thread - thanks!

She had faeces (not a lot but some) caked around her vent - it took a while to get it about 99% clean. She's in good form. Is laying again after a 24 hr period last wk during which time we had one normal egg & two softies. Couldn't see lice or any sign of worms in her droppings. There are an awful lot of her downy feathers around the run today. She looked sp"Ooops, word censored!" underneath but I wonder is this just because she was wet? There weren't any obvious spots where feathers have been lost. However, Delia did come up to her and peck at her near her tail.

So - is she pulling them out herself, is she moulting (although I read that they don't moult in their first year - she's only just started to lay) or is she being pecked? I think I should worm them ... the Pekins are 11 and 13w, are they too young to worm? If so, is there any way to worm some but not the others? Should I spray her with anti-peck spray when she's dry as a precautionary measure?

Am I fretting about nothing?

Thanks!!
