iar fach goch
I am toying with the idea of entering the local school/village fete on Saturday. For the first time they have included a category for a box of home grown veg in an attempt to persuade amateurs (who may not have four perfectly formed potatoes or three identical lettuce!) to enter. At present I have garlic, spring onions, potatoes, courgettes, tomatoes, turnips and a huge marrrow. What is the best way to display? How much cleaning/trimming etc should I do? I have never entered anything like this so haven't got a clue and am not sure whether I should go for it or not?!?
Eggie232
I know absolutely nothing about showing prize veg...but just wanted to say "go for it!" and wish you the best of luck! Let us know how you get on!
SJChick
Hi We've entered some fruit and veg in our local show before. The winning potatoes at the show I've seen are clean with no scabby marks and really look all about the same size. Our show is in tents and we have to leave the items the night before so people usually cover the potatoes with newspaper to protect them from the flourescent light which seems to turn them slightly green overnight (we learnt that the hard way the first year ) We have won first and second with courgettes before and we just cut them off the plant at the little stalk, again pick 3 the are roughly the same width and length. We usually show ours just on a plate without the flowers on the end (they fall off so easily) We have entered tomatoes before but never won, however, the winners are again, all very similar in shape and colour and always seem to have managed to keep the little green leafs on the top. Let us know how you get on if you decide to enter. Our show is this weekend so we are getting excited - sadly!! Good luck!
