Golden Silkie Posted April 19, 2007 Share Posted April 19, 2007 i am getting the eglu with 3 chickens. but a local farm sells chicks and i was wandering when the best time, or whether to even bother introducing them to each other would be. i am worried that the chickens will beat up the chick. The Dogmother Posted April 19, 2007 Share Posted April 19, 2007 You're right to worry, generally speaking an adult hen won't tolerate chicks that aren't her own - they will only be acceoted as part of the flock if they have their mummy to protect them. You would have to rear them yourself, house them seperately and introduce them gradually when they are mature. I have hatched eggs under a surrogate mum, the were in a run with the other freeranging around them, but there was still quite a kerfufle when I intriduced them to the rest of the flock.
