Jools
Unless you've got particularly fussy chooks, I'd say grow whatever will grow well there. Not much help, sorry!
Stedic
I put some green manure in my raised beds to improve the soil quality about 3 weeks ago. I didn't want the chickens to eat it, but, well, you know what they're like. I planted Winter Tares and Rye Grass. They ate the winter tares when they sprouted, but then seem to have left them alone. They go nuts for the rye grass though, as soon as they come out of the run they go straight for it. The other good thing with it is that it costs about £1.50 for 6 square metres of coverage and it grows to a decent size in about two weeks. My two are quite happy grazing on it whenever they can.
