horselovinginger
So today, my dogs were out in our field on their own while I went to feed my horse. Was away for 10 minutes, but in that time one our next door neighbours chickens had hopped into our field, and unfortunately our dogs got hold of one. Thankfully I found them before they had done too much damage. But would like some advice on fixing her up. The dogs have cut the skin near the base of her neck, the cut is about an inch long. Thankfully it is only the skin, and hasn't gone very deep at all. I have put some purple spray on to try and stop any infection, but I was wondering what else to do with her. Should I bandage up to help the skin close together a little quicker, or leave it open to the air so that it scabs over quicker. A similar thing happened to one of my chickens last year, she made a full recovery, but as it was a while ago I just wanted some extra advice. Also, is there anything I can do to just help her as I think she is in shock. I popped her in an animal carrier in our garage, so she could be somewhere dark and quiet to rest, and I've given her a little bran mash with some poultry spice in, and some water in case she gets thirsty. Also, our neighbours don't have a run to keep her in while she's recovering, or anywhere to keep her seperate from the others, so will she be ok to go out and about straight away and mix with the others, or will they need to come up with something? Thanks again! Any advise would be great!
Egluntyne
I think you have done all you can. If you have some wound powder, a bit of that might help. Also, some Rescue Remedy might help her over the shock. A night in the warm with plenty of fluids will do her more good than anything. I'd let your neighbour do the worrying about how to separate her (and keep her off your property).
sandyhas3chucks
perhaps suggest a dog crate to them.. they may not think of that!
horselovinginger
Thanks, yes I'd thought of a dog cage, thought I would lend them our one for a few days once she is back with them, as I'm caring for her atm as I don't think my neighbours know much about chickens. But thankfully I think the neighbours are going to finish building their chicken run this weekend, so fingers crossed she'll be able to go in there, but maybe in the dog cage just to stop the others bullying her.
