tracker57
Hi All, We have 2 Silkies around 21 weeks old and one of them has started to make very load clucking noises, followed by a screech. Now its not all the time, we have only heard it twice in the last week and our neighbours say that they are quiet when we are at work. We think it may possibly be like an alarm call as we have a few cats around which does seem to scare them. Also, afterwards they are both really on edge looking everywhere and bobbing their heads as though they are looking for something. But we cannot see anything... can this be normal? We thought at 1st she maybe crowing, its not in the morning, but anytime, she also has no distinguishing male features. Any help would be appreciated Thanks
Redwing
Yes that sounds like warning noises, its usually the cockerel that will screech but a hen will also do it in the absence of a cockerel in the flock
Olly
Yes, one of mine does this - sometimes it's because she has seen something, like one of the cats (although she sees them every day ) but at other times there is nothing that I can see that would have startled her. It's definitely an alarm call, though. I think it's a bit like that scary thing cats do, where they suddenly start staring into a corner and listening very hard, even though you can't see anything - always gives me the shivers when that happens and I'm at home on my own! They obviously see something we don't.
tracker57
Hey, thanks for the replies guys! Phew, glad to hear its not just ours that screeches. Its very scary the 1st time you hear it!! We have already had to re-home 1 Silkie as we thought it was a girl, but turned out a boy. I know what you mean about cats and staring though! Ours does it too!
