Emmakay391
Firstly hi! Ive been lurking a long time so thought id at least make a post. I love pets but have stuck to keeping fancy rats for 15 years now as well as my dog. I want to carry on with my rats it just im getting a urge for something new. I noticed the eglu a few years ago and loved it. I also went to a agricultural show this year and they were selling some beautiful chickens. Also had loads in competions. This got me interested and i keep reading this forum even though im not planning on getting an eglu or chickens. The main reasons would be because next door are really funny about things. They like to complain, they moan about the dogs that bark in the street or my bf shutting his car door too hard which wakes them up in the morning! I know hens can be noisy so im sure they would complain as soon as they knew we were getting some. Also they already tell us everytime they see a wild rat (prob because she thinks its discusting that i keep tame ones) Its a shame because if i didnt have neighbours i would get some...but anyway i still keep reading this forum admiring everybody elses chicks! Mercedes55
Well I wouldn't let a neighbour put me off keeping hens. We have 8 now, not sure how we came to have 8 as we started out in the Summer intending to just get 2, but I think they are addictive I know some people do have hens that make a bit of noise, but they really aren't that loud. We have a neighbour to one side of us, and as we are at the end of a road we have 5 gardens that go along the side of our boundary and one along the back, so a total of 7 in all None of these neighbours were even aware that we had hens, they have only found out when we have seen them and told them. Emmakay391
lol I dont know about Hens but i know how addictive pets can be, i always said i would only keep 2/3 rats at a time but somehow i have 6. I would love a 2nd dog too But yeah i would only ever have 2 hens if i was to ever get them, but i suppose you all said that at first lol. What i always wonder is with the eglu classic or go how do you manage to clean the run bit. If i was to keep the run on woodchips in a perm spot how easy are they to get inside and rake? Of course this is just me imagining if i were to get some Emma x
daxigirl
My neighbours didn't realise that I'd actually got the chooks till I mentioned it 3 weeks later, don't think the other side knows yet 4 weeks later. As for the rats/mice in the garden the chickens would eat them (as I've seen mine do) with considerable relish . Yes to the raking the wood chippings by crawling in the run. Also yes to popping out in my jimjams of a morning to let them out and feed them, I would say egg collecting but nothing yet, good job I've got high fencing. Mercedes55
Well I'm not a great fan of the Eglu run to be honest. I used to reach in as far as I could and pick out bits of poo, but even when we had the run slabbed and then covered with woodchips it did get kind of messy. That was the reason we decided to get a WIR so that now I can go inside the run every morning, keep nice and dry too and take my time picking up the bits of poo with my disposable gloves and scented nappy sack
migsy
You know you want some and who could justifiably complain about just 2 chickens? Its called sustainable food sourcing!
