debnkev
ever since we got our eglu cube a few years ago, we have had trouble getting our hens to roost on the bars, we've had the wooden ones and have now changed to plastic to make cleaning easier. At the moment, the 2 hens we have always sleep (and poop!) in the egg laying compartment which means we have to change the bedding every day while the sawdust trays stay clean as a whistle. Has anyone else had this experience and are there any tips to help get them to roost where they are supposed to?
Dizzy-Deb
Mine have started doing that, and its been ever since I switched to using shavings in the nest area. I was using shredded paper but run out... so used the shavings instead. I intend to switch back to the paper and see if they stop doing it. I have to clean it out every morning too. I wonder if they only do it with certain bedding materials. Might be worth experimenting. Edited September 16, 2010 by Guest
cavysqueak
Our girls constantly try to sleep in the nest box in our cube. We had to start 'posting' them back through the hole into the correct area when we had all five girls trying to sleep in there at once! Now we have one older girl trying to stay in there, but the others all relent to the pressure and stay out. We did try putting a cardboard barrier with a bucket behind it to stop them from getting in, but I forgot to take it out one day, so they all laid their eggs in the roost area sorry girls. jess1merlin
I have one who tries to sleep in the nesting box each night, I just wait till its nearly dark and post her back through the hole onto the bars where she stays for the night. It must be quite dark though or she will slip back into the nest box.
hasnett
my eldest eventually started roosting - initally she hated the plastic bars but after 4 months adjusted. x
