Only been laying a month and broody already?

Recommended Posts

One of our girls, Dotty, has spent virtually the entire day today in the nest box. I didn't think much of it at first as it's a foul day (sorry) and the others have been in and out all day as well.

We finally went to investigate and found her sitting on two eggs and you could say she had the right hump when we turfed her out. Sneaky hen walked back round and tried to get straight back in again! She's since been seeing all the others off and was last seen chasing one of our cats round the garden!

Not quite sure what we should be doing to detract her from her new found hormonal state. H is quite shocked that she's gone broody so young and has been mentioning a roast

All advice gratefully received. They're all in a wooden coop with massive run covering half of our lawn at the moment (we got the 25m wire and thought we should make use of it!) so separating her completely could be difficult.

Thanks

She does sound broody - does she flatten herself like a pancake over the eggs and sort of growl at you? If she is broody then the only thing that works with mine is a dog crate up on bricks (broody cage) it is the air flow underneath them that cools them down. Hopefully she could be separated in the run like this without too much trouble.
