5piggies
I am new to keeping hens having aquired an eglu over the summer. I have 3 hybrid hens (Sally, Doris and Gwen) who have been happily laying medium sized eggs everyday now for a few weeks. They are only 6 months old now and are fed layers pellets with a hand full of mixed corn in the evening. They spend all day free ranging in my garden. Recently Gwen has started laying huge eggs - over 3 inches long and weighing over 95g. They are twice the size of a normal egg with very thick shells - so big I can't close an egg box! Is this normal? She doesn't seem to be in any distress and the eggs aren't blood stained but I am worried about her being able to cope. I have thought about giving her more corn and less pellets as the winter approaches - would this make any difference? Has anyone had this problem before? quickcluck
I'd say lucky you!!!!! There's not much you can do about it to be honest, as long as she's ok, just look forward to them!

jennydavies
Our hens have all laid huge eggs now and again recently, they are all young still (approx 10 months old) the eggs weigh at least 100g's and always have two yolks. None of our girls suffer any ill effects after they lay these huge beauties and they are absolutely sooo tasty. Ours have pellets, corn, mixed grains, wheat and veg treats each day plus they free range nearly every day. Over here everyone feeds their hens on just corn (it's cheaper than pellets) and they get huge eggs as well. Two of our girls were bought from our neighbour, they are still very new to laying (only one month), they have only eaten corn until being rehomed with us and we have had 100g eggs from both of them. 5piggies
Thanks for the reassurance (and the link). I've just eaten my first; poached for breakfast - a double yolk and so delicious. I guess I'm just lucky. I still feel a sorry for Gwen though - how does she get it out? _ eye watering!!
