Unrest in the Coop!

Recommended Posts

We have 6 ex-bats. One of the girls has no feathers on her back. The last 2 mornings she has been covered in blood all over her back. I assume that one or more of the others are attacking her.

We've separated her out into a smaller run and have an old rabbit hutch to keep her in.

Is this the right thing to do, or should we leave her in with the others and allow them to work it out?

I'm sorry to hear that. You have definitely done the right thing by separating her from the others, and you should keep her like that until her wounds have healed, poor girl. Is she badly injured? If so, she may need to see the vet. If not, clean her up and allow her to recover completely before attempting to reintroduce her. There is excellent advice on the forum about introducing hens, and you may need to follow this and do it slowly and gradually to avoid a repeat of the problem.

How is your hen recovering?

Assuming she is okay I think the best plan would be to take a gentler girl out of your others and put them together for a week. Then you can reintroduce the two of them and the bullied hen should have an ally.

She's been back with them for a few more days. No blood since I last posted. She is still getting the odd peck, but it does seem to have settled down.
