Auto door randomly closing during the day

Help! Our chicken run has turned into a complete mud bath with all the rain we've been having recently. Our 2 chooks live in a big enclosed pen which used to be lawn and is now just dirt. Inside the pen is an eglu with run attached which a tarpaulin over it so their food and water is always dry and they have shelter. But the rest of the area looks like a mud bath and the chickens are getting very dirty! I'm worried this will spread disease or ill health. Any suggestions for improving the floor?

Welcome to the forum . Lots of people use horse bedding (Hemcore/Aubiose/Easibed - there are lots of other types) in their runs which helps to keep things dry but you do need to cover the run as they are very absorbant - don't know if that's an option for you?

 

Alternatively, I would suggest Stalosan F (or another powdered disinfectant) which will help to dry things up a bit and will keep nasties at bay. You could also put down some garden lime which will neutralise the acidity from all the poop.

If the run is too large to be covered (it sounds like it is) then woodchips would be your best bet
