New to all of this!!!!

Recommended Posts

Hi there i am after some advice about chickens please!!! I am a total novice and purchased 3 chickens about 4 weeks ago, i was told when i purchased them that the oldest one was the lohman who was 19 weeks old and that the other two weren't far behind her. Basically my question is that i still havent had a single egg from any of the three birds and wondered if this was normal??? Also one of the chickens (which is by far the most nervous of the birds) seems to have permanent runs, the other two are fine but this one seems to have the runs constantly and i wondered if that might be something to do with the food i feed them on??? I just feed them solely on layers pellets and kitchen s"Ooops, word censored!"s which is what i was advised to do by the person i bought them from, am i doing the right thing??? Any advise would be much appreciated!!!!!!

Welcome to the forum!

I think it's quite normal for them not to lay straight away, especially this time of year and if they are pure breeds. One of my hybrids has only been laying for a short while and I've had her since the beginning of Oct, there's no sign of the other one starting to lay yet.

Have they been wormed with Flubenvet? I wormed mine just to be sure and got my first egg not long after. :D Make sure they eat enough pellets as that is the best thing for them to eat, I only give mine fresh greens and corn in the afternoon to make sure they fill up on pellets first.

You could also try using apple cider vinegar in their water and/or poultry spice and garlic powder mixed with their food to boost their immune system (if you're not already doing it, that is). I tried all sorts to get them settled in their new home and seem to have got rid of the runny poos.

That's all I can think of, hope someone more knowledgeable will be along soon. Hope you get the poo situation under control and will get your first egg soon. :D

its normal not to have had any eggs as yet, it probably wont be long though!

Cut out the s"Ooops, word censored!"s for now to see if the layers pellets prompt the laying and help their tummies

Avipro which is a probiotic powder is good to add to their water to help settle their tums too, its not unusual for chickens to have the runs as a result of being moved but it should have settled down by now really

they probably dont have a heavy worm burden at that age but its worth worming them just in case
