sgoard
Sorry I'm new to this forum and while searching for advice on introducing new chicken(s) to a solitary chicken I keep seeing people refer to a WIR which I assume is a type of run - sorry to be a dufus but I am intrigued! I have an Omlet Eglu with a run extension kit which my lonely girl Cookie (an Omlet Miss Pepperpot) spends most of her time in when we are not home - should I have a WIR?! Any assistance with introducing a new girl (2 new girls?) to her would also be greatly appreciated as I keep seeing that you shouldnt keep 1 hen on their own. However, since Ginge died at the beginning of October (just before we went away on holiday) Cookie seems to be fine on her own but I am concerned that she should have some company. I am equally concerned about her reaction to an interloper! Please advise! thanks
MadAboutChooks
Hiya, Welcome to the forum, so such thing as a silly question, a WIR is a Walk in Run, Chicken are social creatures so do benefit from company, there is plenty of information on Introductions on this forum and the best ways of doing it. It is up to you whether you introduce 1 or two, although if you have a standard eglu run you may need a converter to make the run bigger, however the advantage of introducing 2 is that if and when another dies you are not left with a lonesome chook again. Hope this helps.
sgoard
Many thanks for clearing that up - it all makes perfect sense now! Our eglu run already has an extension so think we would be ok with another 2 girls. Have been doing some more research and am considering a couple of ex batts - I hope Cookie would be a bit more tolerant of the 'feather challenged' variety being a bit that way herself on her breast and wing tips (nothing to worry about according to the vet!) have already put my wanted add on freecycle for a hutch and run to assist with the introductions - fingers crossed.
