Chickendoodle
I have just iced my Christmas cake and I used fondant icing I bought from a cake decorating shop. Didn't have quite enough for the figures so I bought some Silver Spoon fondant icing from the supermarket. The icing from the cake shop was £4.80 per kilo and the Silver Spoon was £1.99 per kilo!!!! No discernible difference in the feel, colour or quality. I am making my YD's wedding cake next year and would appreciate anyone's views as to which one I should use. I want to use the best possible and am happy to pay for the one supplied in the cake shop if I feel that there is a good reason to use it. Anyone have any views or experience in this? Lydia
Having used both I can't say there is a great different in the white range. The upside of the stuff you get in the cake shop is it comes in ivory and a whole host of colours which saves having to mess around with food colouring (and ending up with green or whatever colour fingers/worktop/brushes/utensils for the next week!). If you are just using white however, the supermarket stuff will be fine - just make sure you massage it well to begin with to get it really pliable and prevent cracking. Good luck with the wedding cake!

Chickendoodle
Thanks - I think the colour question might sway it. I am making a topsy turvy cake which involves a lot of carving so I don't want any extra stress trying to colour icing Wedding is in May so I am going to do a trial run with 2 layers after Christmas as I am currently having severe palpitations just thinking about it. Watched many very helpful tutorials on youtube showing how to do it
C&T
I made my first Wedding cake earlier this year - can understand the pressure! I used the cheaper stuff on the recomendation of someone a lot more experienced, and it was fine, but didn't use any colour... The whole thing was a bit nerve racking, but taking one step at a time, and making sure I had plenty of time for each step and it turned out pretty good! Good luck - I am sure it will be amazing!
