wont stay out in the snow

Recommended Posts

I let my girls out this morning as I had a flexi day off and even though it was

very cold, the sun was shining at the bottom of the garden. The 4 oldies

followed me down to the greenhouse and I tried to open the one that has a bare

earth floor which the girls love to dust bathe in. The door was frozen shut so I

lit a tiny fire with bits of paper/tissues to defrost it. Cue, hens being very

nosey and me fielding them off while I waited for the fire to go out and opening

the door for them. They then were allowed in there when I had blown the little

heater out. It was warm in there anyway because it gets the morning sun even in

the depths of winter. I went to clean out the runs but it is impossible in the

new exbatts run because they wont go out. They get in the way and follow me

everywhere. I put some bowls of treats in the yard to encourage them to get out

but after gulping down the best bits, back they came. I locked them out while I

swept up and they were trying to squeeze through the bars to get back in. I

found 3 eggs up on the top of the straw bales, these are five foot off the

ground!! they have a lovely nest box in their eglu so why lay up there? I am

going to have to dismantle the whole thing at the weekend in case any eggs have

fallen down behind the bales. The orpingtons and Bam bam sleep up there but the

batties do sleep in their eglu. These new girls seem to be growing their

feathers back extra quickly and are so friendly . Must take some more pics of

them.
