Warning about Chick Food Dates

Recommended Posts

Chicken food always has a short use by date and if it goes a bit past that will not do them any harm

Chick food however is a different story, the chicks need optimum nutrition - I know we often think of uuse by dates as a formality but the nutrition in feed does reduce in time, if it runs some days over dont panic but dont buy it when its already out of date

at this time of year shops often put out the last of last year's stock as hatching season for most really isnt underway - In the last week I have found out of date chick food in three different shops

I had some chicks die last year and others fail to thrive and was told that its more than likely out of date food - when I checked the bag the date label had been torn carefully so just the year was missing. Once I switched feeds the remaining chicks did really well.

So anyone early hatching do check the dates on chick crumbs and dont buy it if its out of date even if its reduced!

Also look at growers feed. I had to use 'Pets at Home' to get growers befor Christmas as other suppliers didn't stock it locally. In November most bags had less than 2 weeks on the date and one was on its sell by date (I pointed this out to staff). In December I got a bag with a reasonable date, but the November bag was still on the shelf. In early Jan I went in and the same bag was 10% off for being a 'short date', when it was 6 weeks out of date!

It is always the first thing I check before buying feed.
