Kylie1007
Are they good egg layers? My silkie is laying like a dream but my other 2 chickens don't seem to even be showing signs of laying even though they're all the same age!
chicken bark
I think Orpingtons are so so layers, Faverolles should be better. Personally I wouldn't get Orpingtons if you want a good layer, but more because of their nature/personality. Different breeds mature at different times so POL covers quite a long age range. Good choice of breeds (if you like cuddly ones that is), I will be collecting an Orp and two Faverolles this weekend.
meezers
I'm pleasantly surprised by my Faverolles. She's laying approx 5 eggs a week and they are a good size - far bigger than the one she hatched out of
Kylie1007
Well Esmerelda my BO started crouching today so hopefully she's getting into egg laying mode! Does crouching automatically mean eggs?
chicken bark
It is a good sign that eggs may not be long off. I think it means she thinks you may be a cockerel wanting to do his thing. (hope that is not offensive)

(hope that is not offensive) No offense taken I know she thinks I'm a cockerel but I just wondered if all female chickens crouch even if they're not going to lay an egg? Whether it's just a girl 'thang'
chicken bark
No I think crouching = laying or soon to be. It's the only way I can catch my girls.
